Hello Graceful Warriors! This week we are discussing-Deny Yourself & Carry your Cross like a Hero Carry your Cross like a HeroTopics discussed- Questions to ask-Matt 16:24- Three commands are in this verse. But how do we do this? What is he asking us to carry? Where do we find it? Or does it stand for something more mysterious and deeper then anything we could understand?what carrying the cross meant during Jesus time-To carry a cross was to face the most painful and humiliating means of death human beings could develop. If you were carrying a cross, you were on your way to be crucified. what do we suffer these days- we are mocked, laughed at- called names. even worse- some are arrested and put to death with no trial. (overseas). Churches shut down. What we as Americans go through is so miniscule as to what 1st century church has gone through and what the church goes through overseas-- why do we shut down from name calling? what denial means-Gospel Coaltion states it perfectly-Denial in the New Testament is the intentional disassociation from relationship with a particular person. Another translation, then, might be to “disown” or “renounce.” For example, this is the verb used when Peter “denies” Jesus. He denies that he knows Jesus or has any association with him.Self-denial, then, is intentional disowning of the self, or stepping away from relationship with the self as primary. Jesus is not making a statement about whether the self is bad, but about who we are most closely associated with. Who is our primary allegiance to—him, or ourselves? We are bought by his blood. no longer are we our own but his.Pick up your Cross like a heroGC states- We aren’t occasionally called to pick up a certain cross; we are called to an entire way of life. We often speak of whether we are willing to “count the cost” of discipleship. But the real issue is not the costliness of following Jesus—it’s our willingness to follow him regardless of the cost. The greatness or littleness of the cost is no longer emphasized; rather, all of life is to be surrendered to him.Got Questions- stated it perfectly-"Bearing a cross meant one was about to die, and that one would face ridicule and disgrace along the way." Many thought the Christ would immediately usher in the restored kingdom (Luke 19:11). They believed He would free them from the oppressive rule of their Roman occupiers. Or our Govt admin now. Some hoped He would continue to provide free lunches for everyone (John 6:26). Jesus’ statement that following Him requires taking up a cross made people think twice about their motivations and level of commitment. Its about the heart not lip action. God looks at the heart. This change in our thought patterns produces a change in our actions and connects us with Heavens' purposes for the earth. Tempering and forging is life's dance between extremes- water, fire and pressure. But God's Word hones what is shapeless into focused purpose. God refines us for his own sake. More battles always means more swords and sometimes new ones are given. We can choose whether affliction tempers and balances our lives or just makes us miserable. God's hand is on you to do something special.
